Bhlaosc (Shell in Irish)

The “Bhlaosc” (Irish for shell) sculpture is handmade using a coil technique, that is then carved and embellished with texture using earthstone clay and clay slip. The word “Bhlaosc” is entwined into the hand painted exterior design, running right around the sculpture in my own handwriting. The overall design was influenced from crab claws that I collect on the beach by my home at low tide.

The sculpture is fired in the kiln twice in the making process, each firing anchors the washes and velvet ceramic paints which are applied in steps, the final firing reaching 1140 degrees. All work is signed by the artist D.F.C. (Darren Francis Cassidy).

These vessels are decorative only and not food safe.
